What is the TIE?

The Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) is a mandatory document for all non-EU foreigners residing in Spain for more than 6 months. The TIE includes the Foreigner Identification Number (NIE), which is assigned uniquely and is necessary to carry out various legal and administrative procedures in Spain.

Documents required for the TIE

Request an Appointment

  • The application for the TIE is made at an immigration office or at the designated police station in Barcelona.
  • To request an appointment, go to the official page for appointments of the Government of Spain: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/icpplus.
  • Select "Barcelona" as the province and then the procedure "Issuance of Foreigner Identity Card (TIE)".
  • Choose the date and time available for your appointment at the assigned office.

Picking up your TIE

  • You must request an appointment 30-40 days after the initial appointment. You can do it at this link: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/icpplus.
  • To pick up the TIE, you must go with the receipt that was given to you at the initial appointment and with your passport.

Renewal

You can apply 60 days before the TIE expires, up to 90 days after the TIE expires.
